Olanjii/Charubah Battle Dragon (Historical Information)
The Hapans are a rich and powerful people who have maintained extreme militancy in defending their borders. They have designed many combat star ships, including the famed Hapan Battle Dragons. Battle Dragons are roughly five hundred metres in diameter and are instantly recognisable with their prominent double saucers. Each Battle Dragon has forty turbolasers, forty ion cannons, dorsal and ventral triple ion cannons, ten proton-torpedo launchers, a single tractor-beam projector, and four pulse mass generator tubes. Hapes significantly lacks turbolaser technology, with a weapon recharge rate only one third of comparable imperial weapons. While the actual blasts are just as damaging, the slow recharge rate is a significant liability. The Hapans compensated for this by developing a superior “weapon rotation” system. All the weapons are mounted on a drive system that rotates around the saucer: weapons are moved to the optimal target point, fired, and immediately moved away for recharging, while new weapons are instantly moved into place. The Hapans also link weapon banks to a single targeting computer; each Battle Dragon only has four targeting computers. These linked weapons offer pinpoint targeting against a single target but cannot accurately target multiple ships. Against enemy groups, Battle Dragons must throw up a “wall of energy”, firing all their weapons into a single vector with the hope of scoring major hits.
Thus, Hapans normally deploy Battle Dragons on groups to give them the ability to attack more than one target. They have adopted the gravity well-projector technology that was developed by the Empire for imperial interdictor heavy cruisers. Hapan scientists have also developed “pulse mass mines” which produce “mass shadows”, simulating the effects of planetary bodies and deterring ships from jumping into hyperspace. Each Battle Dragon carries sixteen pulse mass mines. The Battle Dragons’ hangar bays can carry three squadrons of fighters (thirty-six fighters) and an enhanced fighter for the wing commander. The Hapans have their own Miy’Til fighters but also use X-Wings and other designs. Support ships generally include four Hapan gunboats, six drop ships, and four personnel shuttles.
Hapan Battle Dragons carry five hundred troops for ground assault. In Prince Isolder’s bid for the hand of Leia Organa, the Hapans brought sixty-three Battle Dragons to Coruscant: one to represent each inhabited world in their home Star Cluster. Each Battle Dragon is painted to honour the world it is pledged to. Prince Isolder’s personal Battle Dragon, the song of war, is painted a deep battle red to represent his courage and bravery. The Battle Dragons also came to the assistance of the New Republic in the Battle of Dathomir, where the combined forces routed the warlord Zsinj’s fleet.
